Research

Nicole Carter, MSW, RSW, is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University, where she teaches in both the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and the Master of Science in Psychotherapy program. Her teaching focuses on evidence-based psychotherapy, clinical reasoning, professional competencies, communication, ethics, and reflective practice. She is also the founder of Valley Centre for Counselling, where she provides clinical supervision and evidence-based psychotherapy for children, adolescents, adults, and families. Nicole's areas of expertise include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based approaches, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, trauma, perfectionism, and behavioural interventions. She is passionate about translating psychological science into practical tools for clinicians, healthcare learners, families, and children through teaching, curriculum development, workshops, public speaking, and children's literature. Nicole is the author of Brave on Purpose, a children's book that translates evidence-based CBT principles into a warm, accessible story that gives children and families a shared language for understanding anxiety and facing fears. She also created the Worries Card Sort, an evidence-informed assessment tool that helps children safely identify, communicate, and explore their worries through play.
