Research
Rine Vieth is trained as a socio-legal scholar and serves as an Assistant Professor (Contractually Limited) at McMaster University in the Department of Religious Studies. They teach and research in the intersections of migration, law, gender, and religion. Their current research orients around anti-gender movements’ impacts on migration in Canada and the UK, the role of deliberate doubt in anti-gender activism, and religious solidarities in migration support. Their earlier doctoral research analyzed how the UK asylum and immigration tribunals adjudicated asylum appeals for claims made on the basis of religious conversion. They have been featured in outlets like the CBC and the Rover, and have written for a number of social science blogs like Platypus, Anthrodendum, and the New Ethnographer. They have also been involved in supporting policy advocacy and reviews around migration, religion, and/or gender in the UK, the US, and Canada. Outside of teaching and research, they are an active board member of AGIR Montréal (Action LGBTQIA+ avec les ImmigrantEs et Réfugiés), the Canadian Law and Society Association (CLSA), and Radio Snack, a queer-led arts makerspace.
