Dr. Duarte is an Associate Professor and Academic Head of the Geriatric Psychiatry Division at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University, Clinical Head of the Brain Stimulation Service at St. Josephs Healthcare Hamilton and Medical Lead at Peter Boris Brain Stimulation Program. He completed his M.D. and postgraduate training in Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry at Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Federal University of Minas Gerais and University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Dr. Duarte completed a 3-year Clinical Research Fellowship at Harvard Medical School – Spaulding Hospital. Dr. Duarte is a former recipient of a Distinguished Award from the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry in recognition of his scholarly contributions to the field of Geriatric Psychiatry. His main research interest relies on investigating the mechanisms and clinical outcome of neurostimulation techniques to drive recovery in older adults with mood disorders and cognitive impairment (including early to late-stage dementia). Thus, improving functional abilities and quality of life in vulnerable population.
